Be prepared for a couple days of high temperatures and humidity as we continue to be under a Heat Warning from Environment Canada. A heat wave that began earlier this week in Ontario and Quebec has made its way east. Environment Canada says the high temperatures are expected to last through Saturday in many parts of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island. We should see a high today of 31 with the Humidex at 40.

Gasoline and diesel prices both went up overnight in Nova Scotia. The price of regular gasoline increased by 7.8 cents per litre, putting the minimum pump price for regular self-serve gasoline at $1.77 per litre in the local area. The price of diesel increased by 1.9 cents per litre, leaving the minimum pump price for self-serve diesel at $1.96 per litre locally.

Applications for the Property Tax Rebate for Seniors program are now open. The program helps seniors on a low income with the cost of municipal property taxes. It provides a rebate of half of the previous year’s property taxes, up to $800. To be eligible for the program, people must have paid their 2025 municipal residential property taxes in full; have their name on the property title; and be eligible to receive the Guaranteed Income Supplement or Guaranteed Income Supplement – Allowance from Service Canada. People who received the rebate last year will get an application form by mail. Forms are also available online, at Access Nova Scotia centres and at MLA offices.

The provincial government has granted environmental assessment approval for plans to build what it describes as the province’s largest wind energy project. The Environment Department says the Ocean Lake Wind Project proposed for Guysborough County calls for the construction of 158 turbines. The government says construction is expected to start in 2029 with completion slated for five years later. The government says that once the Ocean Lake Wind Project is operational, it will generate about 1,200 megawatts of clean electricity, enough to power the equivalent of 400,000 homes.

The Nova Scotia Law Enforcement Torch Run kicks off today in support of Special Olympics Nova Scotia and the Summer Games in Antigonish this weekend.
This year, the Run is being held in Pictou County in conjunction with Michelin Torch Run, and it will have runners from law enforcement agencies and Michelin employees that will run throughout Pictou County to raise awareness of Special Olympics Nova Scotia and the Summer Games in Antigonish this weekend.
It will be starting at the Michelin Canada Granton Plant at 11:00 a.m. with the lighting of the Torch. From the Michelin Pictou County location, runners that include Michelin Employees, Law Enforcement Officers, and Special Olympic Athletes, will carry the Flame of Hope throughout Pictou County finishing at the New Glasgow Police Station around 3:30pm. The final leg of the Torch Run will have the torch escorted into Antigonish and into the Special Olympics Nova Scotia Summer Games 2026.
Police vehicles will be at the Wellness Centre at 2:30 p.m. with the Torch for Viewing.
