The RCMP Northeast Nova Major Crime Unit has charged a Bathurst, New Brunswick, man with two counts of Second Degree Murder in relation to two homicides in Colchester County.
Last Wednesday, at approximately 3:30 p.m., 35-year-old Ronald Albert Canuel, who was wanted on an arrest warrant, was arrested after the vehicle he was driving was located by New Brunswick RCMP outside an apartment building in Campbellton.
Canuel has been remanded into custody and brought back to Nova Scotia to appear in Truro Provincial Court.
Labour Minister Steven MacKinnon says the short length of the Liberal leadership race doesn’t give him enough time to mount the kind of campaign he wants to run. In a social media post Sunday, MacKinnon also says he feels the competition to become the next Liberal leader needs diverse, experienced and pragmatic voices in both English and French. The Gatineau-M-P says he feels he could be that voice but will instead focus on his ministerial responsibilities and will listen closely to help make an informed choice around who should replace Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Nova Scotia’s Education Department says a cybersecurity breach involving a student information system could have a financial impact on current and former teachers and staff in Cape Breton. The department has issued a statement saying an investigation into the breach of the PowerSchool system has confirmed that some social insurance numbers collected before 2010 were included in data stolen during the breach. As a result, the department says that about 250 current and former employees of the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional Centre for Education should monitor their bank accounts for irregular activity.
Firefighters in California are scrambling to beat back the wildfires that are erasing Los Angeles from the map. At least 24 people have been killed and officials aren’t certain the death toll won’t continue to climb. Weather forecasters are warning of dangerous weather, as strong Santa Ana winds return this week. 150-thousand people in Los Angeles County are under evacuation orders, with more than 700 people taking refuge in nine shelters. Officials are working to narrow down the cause of the blaze that started the runaway wildfires, ruling out lightning strikes. 60 firefighters from Alberta and BC are headed to California today to assist.
