The lone passenger in the SUV, a woman from Bickerton West, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the SUV, a 74-year-old man from the same village, suffered life-threatening injuries. The five occupants of the other vehicle, a 31-year old man, a 25-year-old man, a 30-year-old woman and two children, all from Antigonish, suffered serious injuries.
The Nova Scotia RCMP is advising of a recent increase in fraudulent phone calls. Scammers disguise their phone number to appear to be from a local phone number in efforts to trick victims into answering the phone and trusting the caller. With the scam calls, on the line is a person stating they are employees from VISA and requesting payment via gift cards. Police suggest you don’t trust call display: be cautious if you get a call from a person saying they represent a company or government agency asking for personal information; and keep personal information private.
A pilot program in Nova Scotia will use artificial intelligences to detect wildfires in the Halifax-area. Specialized cameras have been placed on provincial communications towers in Hammonds Plains, Musquodoboit Harbour and Middle Sackville. The A-I software will monitor for signs of smoke, and will send an alert to Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency if it’s spotted. More than 25-thousand hectares of land were burned and over 200 homes were destroyed in Nova Scotia during last year’s wildfire season.
