RCMP and municipal officers in Pictou County have charged two people in connection with copper wire thefts from power substations in Pictou and Colchester Counties, the South Shore, the Valley and Cape Breton. Police started receiving reports last August about thefts of copper wire from substations in Pictou County. More copper stealing calls have come in since, with additional incidents in Windsor, Fort Ellis, Lunenburg and Port Hawkesbury. The investigation identified Jonathan Buell and Miranda Sprague, both of Stellarton, as suspects in some of these cases. On the evening of Feb. 22nd police followed the suspects from Stellarton to Aberdeen, Cape Breton, and arrested them in the act at a power substation in that area. Buell was inside the fenced area, standing near live NSP equipment with break-in tools and evidence of copper wire thefts. Sprague was arrested outside the fenced-in area. Both are slated to return to face a judge on March 30th.

Federal NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh told the provincial wing on his party in Halifax over the weekend that his focus on social programs will help rejuvenate the party’s fortunes in Nova Scotia by the next provincial election. Singh was at the party’s provincial convention arguing his promotion of a universal pharmacare bill, a national dental care plan and a “massive” investment in affordable housing are gaining traction. The NDP formed a single-term government in Nova Scotia under former premier Darrell Dexter in 2009, but the party’s 31-seat majority was wiped out in the next election, with just seven seats remaining. Under Gary Burrill’s leadership, the provincial NDP has fallen to four seats, and last June it lost a byelection in a Halifax-area stronghold that had been held by the party since 1984. The party also failed to elect even a single Nova Scotia M-P in last fall’s federal election.
The Executive Director of the Nova Scotia Seafood Alliance says lobster shipments to China might be stalled because of the Coronavirus, but shipments to the U-S and Europe are still doing very well. Leo Muise says the Americans were our number one export market for lobster for a good chunk of last year, with China only taking over top spot at the end of the year. He also says Nova Scotia lobsters bound for Europe are still in demand, thanks partly to Canada’s recent CETA trade deal with the Europeans, which is something American lobster harvesters don’t have.

Los Angeles-based Magnetic North Pictures has been busy turning the story of Antigonish County’s Peace by Chocolate founder Tareq Hadhad and his family into a dramatic feature film that’s expected to debut this fall. Shortly after announcing news of the film’s production on social media and the Peace by Chocolate website, Hadhad was excited, saying that around his home – they’ve been using words “unimaginable” to describe the news that their life will be portrayed on the big screen, so people will know the hurdles they faced in relocating their business after it was bombed back in Syria. The movie, being aptly named “Peace by Chocolate”, is directed by a Halifax-raised filmmaker who’s now based in California, who also co-wrote the script. (with files from Saltwire News)
