SAWMILL OPERATORS SEEKING NEW MARKETS AFTER ANNOUNCEMENT OF NORTHERN PULP CLOSURE
Managers of several sawmill companies say the closure of Northern Pulp is one of troubling uncertainty and, so far, there are few answers from the provincial government on how to replace a key customer. Andrew Watters, general manager of the Groupe Savoie mill in Westville, said in an interview with the Canadian Press Monday he has an inventory of hardwood that still has to be milled, but no market yet for wood chip byproducts the mill purchased in the past. The mill manager met with his 45 workers on Friday to tell them the future after the Jan. 31, 2020 closure is unclear, and he wouldn’t criticize them if they sought other work. Premier Stephen McNeil announced Friday morning that Northern Pulp won’t be permitted to continue piping effluent into Boat Harbour, near Pictou Landing First Nation, after Jan. 31. Within an hour, the company announced the closure of the mill in Abercrombie, and predicted the loss of thousands of forestry jobs. (Canadian Press)
Meanwhile, Premier McNeil tells CBC his government met with people in the forestry industry over the weekend and is in the process of finding new markets for the province’s wood chips. Northern Pulp buys about 42,000 truckloads worth of wood chips, bark and round wood from sawmills and woodlots each year. The premier also told CBC a 1-800 number will be set up for families and companies needing support. (CBC)

People are encouraged to reschedule visits for another time if at all possible. They’ve also had to postpone their Family Christmas dinner until the New Year. Managment says if you must visit, please adhere to the posted signs throughout the building for further direction. In consultation with local Public Health, they will provide updates to the public on the Valley View Villa website.
The Hillside Community Centre officially opened its doors on Dec. 15 with a presentation by Clyde MacDonald and Philip MacKenzie. The two men presented the community centre with a photo of the Murray Quintuplets that were born in Hillside in the 1800s and were the first quintuplets born in Canada. Sadly, the infants died shortly after their birth. A plaque was also unveiled in honour of the Murray Quintuplets birth by the Municipality of Pictou County last February and remains on display in the County’s administration building.
On hand, for the presentation, the community hall, are from the back left: MOPC District 9 Coun. Peter Boyles, Willy Murray, Sandy Murray and Donald Fraser
Nova Scotians who would like to voice their opinion about adoption records have until Jan. 3 to complete the online survey. Over 1,800 online surveys have been completed to date and over 100 participants attended an in-person session. Nova Scotians can take the online survey and read more information at: https://novascotia.ca/adoption-records-consultation/
