FRASER VS SCHEER ON GAY RIGHTS
Central Nova Liberal MP Sean Fraser is calling out federal Tory Leader Andrew Scheer for his opposition to gay rights. This weekend in Vancouver, the leader of the federal Conservatives once again refused to appear in a pride parade, which did go ahead with the leaders of the other 3 main federal parties. Fraser says Andrew Scheer’s refusal to attend pride events is just the tip of the iceberg on LGBTQ rights. He points out that during the parliamentary debate on marriage equality, Andrew Scheer made his opposition clear, saying gay marriages “have many of the collateral features of marriage, but they do not have its inherent feature, as they cannot commit to the natural procreation of children. They cannot therefore be married”. Fraser says that quote is from the official transcripts of parliament. As a Liberal, Fraser says Canada has long embraced everyone’s rights, no matter the colour of their skin, the god they pray to, or the person that they love.
SPEED LIMITS TO PROTECT RIGHT WHALES LIFTED
Ottawa is lifting speed restrictions meant to protect North Atlantic right whales in the Gulf of St. Lawrence after finding that the policy may have been pushing ships closer to the endangered mammals. The evidence collected shows there weren’t any whales in the shipping lanes where speed had been reduced. Transport Canada says the lower speed limit had ships taking more direct routes through areas – and those direct routes are in the areas where the animals are known to gather. The agency is hoping that raising the speed limit will push ships back into their normal shipping lanes.

National parole decision-makers say it’s too risky for a North Kentville man convicted of child sex crimes against children to be released on day parole. That decision comes in the case of 44-year-old Jason Troy Pitts. He was sentenced in 2014 to five years in prison on eight counts of conspiring to commit sexual assault on a child. Pitts was also given an extra 2 years on charges of making, possessing and accessing chld pornography in the form of videos being made and live-streamed using child to child contact and sexual contact between an adult woman and a child under the age of 11. Police reported more than 50 money transfers between Pitts and overseas pornography contacts between 2011 and 2012. The parole board says despite his application for day parole, Pitts doesn’t have the community back-up system he needs in order to cut down on his risk to re-offend.
Burning restrictions are in place in all three Maritime provinces in the wake of a sunny and pleasant long weekend, with a bit more wind over the past 48 hours than was the case a week ago. The latest fire was a brush fire that brought crews out in Halifax’s Eastern Passage area for a good part of yesterday. And where you live or decide to go camping this week plays a major role in where you can start a campfire. In Nova Scotia, campfires are totally off limits in every county except for Richmond and Cape Breton counties where burning is onlyl allowed between 7 at night at 8 each morning. In all other countries across Nova Scotia, there is a fire ban. That also means fireworks are off limits.
If you like to fly south in the cold winter months, here’s a story that might interest you. Montreal real estate developer Group Mach is offering Air Transat shareholders $14 per share in an effort to scoop up almost 20 per cent of the airline’s shares. If that succeeds, it could block Air Transat’s sale to Air Canada.Group Mach is making the offer to Class B shareholders, representing an eight per cent premium over Air Canada’s offer of $13 per share. That offer was approved by Transat’s board in June. The Montreal real estate developer says it believes Air Canada undervalues Transat, and that Air Canada’s offer creates uncertainty for Transat employees and its head office. Other critics say that if Air Canada gets its hands on Air Transat, it’ll take control of too many southbound flights from Canada, and push up prices as competition is decreased.
Ontario’s real estate association, which is the largest in the country says Ottawa has gone too far in cutting mortgage availability from coast to coast. It says the rate of Canadian home ownership has dropped in each of the past 3 years. The association says if young home buyers have the insurance to cover them, there’s no problem with re-instating a 30-year mortgage period, which was cut off by Ottawa in an effort to keep peoples’ debts from getting out of control. It also wants land transfer taxes to be reduced. With less than 100 days until the next federal election, the group says it’s time to put these issues on the front burner.
YELLOW RIBBONS TO ADORN PICTOU’S WATER STREET
The Town of Pictou will be taking part in Operation Yellow Ribbon with a ceremony at Market Square at 11 o’clock this morning. (Tuesday) Members of CEF will be attaching ribbons to the poles along Water Street at that time. The Yellow Ribbon has been a part of honouring the military for generations and Pictou town council feels it’s important for that tradition to continue.
