Significant decreases overnight in gas and diesel prices in Nova Scotia. The price of regular gasoline went down by 7.2 cents per litre, leaving the minimum pump price for regular self-serve gasoline at $1.79 per litre in the local area. The price of diesel decreased by 12.1 cents per litre, putting the minimum pump price for self-serve diesel at $2.07 per litre locally.
The leader of the opposition Liberals is calling on the province’s new energy minister to do something about electricity rates that have jumped by about 20 per cent since the Conservatives assumed power in 2021. As well, Iain Rankin told Marco MacLeod that Nova Scotia’s electricity system has become less reliable. Rankin says the Liberals have already asked for an independent review of Nova Scotia Power, the province’s privately owned electric utility. As well, Rankin wants the government to draft a multi-year rate plan to provide predictability for families and businesses.
R-C-M-P in Antigonish Country say the death of a man whose body was found in West Arm Tracadie has been ruled a homicide. The 42-year-old victim’s death was initially ruled suspicious after his body was found outside on Arthur’s Point on the evening of May 21st. The Mounties say evidence that’s been collected so far points to it being a targeted incident with no risk to public safety. They’re looking for anyone with information on the case to contact them.
Provincial funding and a new data tool will help communities be prepared for – and respond to – water shortages caused by drought. Applications for the Sustainable Communities Challenge Fund opened on Thursday, with priority given to projects that address drought and water shortages. The Province also launched a new data portal with information on Nova Scotia’s ground and surface water resources. About $6.3 million is available in this round of funding for municipalities, non-profit and community organizations, post-secondary institutions and Mi’kmaw communities.
