An environmental group here in Nova Scotia says thousands of lobster bands are washing up on the province’s shores. Scotian Shores, a group based in the Annapolis Valley, says that within the first two weeks of the year, they’ve found thousands of rubber bands. The group helped clean up the beach in Scots Bay on Saturday. Group founder Angela Riley says the bands were once promoted as biodegradable, but she has seen that they pose a threat to wildlife.
Key players in Nova Scotia’s lucrative seafood industry are celebrating Ottawa’s successful bid to persuade China to temporarily drop a painful 25 per cent tariff on Canadian lobster and crab. Some say the tariff cost the province’s economy more than 400-million dollars since it was imposed in March. In 2024, live lobster exports to China accounted for 40 per cent of Nova Scotia’s export market, generating about 600 million dollars in revenue, while the U-S accounted for another 40 per cent.
Prime Minister Mark Carney says he is concerned about what he calls U-S escalation after President Donald Trump threatened tariffs on eight European countries opposing a U-S bid to purchase Greenland.
Trump says a 10 per cent tariff will take effect February 1st and rise to 25 per cent on June 1st without a deal for the U-S to acquire the self-governing Danish territory.
Carney says Canada supports Greenland’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and that its future should be decided by Greenlanders and Denmark, adding the territory is protected through NATO.
He says Canada will continue working with alliance partners to strengthen Arctic defence and will raise the issue with Trump if they meet at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
