Canada Post says no new mail will be accepted during the strike by its workers, and some post offices will be closed.
The Canadian Union of Postal Workers has declared a countrywide strike, hours after Ottawa announced door-to-door mail delivery will end for nearly all Canadian households within the next decade.
The corporation is disappointed that the union has chosen to escalate its strike activity, which it says will further deteriorate Canada Post’s financial situation.
Both sides have agreed to continue delivering government welfare cheques, and that a process is in place to deliver existing live-animal shipments, though no new ones will be accepted.
Gas prices went down 4.2 cents per litre overnight in Nova Scotia, while there is no change in diesel prices. The minimum pump price for regular self-serve gasoline now stands at $1.41 per litre in the local area. Diesel prices remain at $1.52 per litre locally.
