A 41-year old Pictou man is facing a number of charges as he’s accused of a series of offences last week. Last Wednesday morning, the RCMP and Truro Police were investigating the theft of a truck from Truro. They found the truck abandoned in Carrolls Corner and learned that the man involved was travelling in another stolen vehicle. Officers located that vehicle in Valley and were able to disable it in Crows Mills using a spike belt. Police say the driver tried to run off but was located and arrested with the help of RCMP Police Dog Services and RCMP Air Services. The man suffered some injuries during the arrest and was taken to hospital by EHS. The Pictou man faces charges that include Flight from Police; Dangerous Driving;Uttering Threats; Mischief; and Assaulting a Police Officer. He’s also facing charges from Truro Police for the robbery.
A busy section of Highway 102 near Truro will soon be going through a major fix. The Department of Public Works says it will repave about 13 kilometres of the southbound lanes from the Millbrook interchange at Exit 13 to the Shortts Lake Road overpass. A tender will be issued in the coming days, and the project is expected to be complete by late fall. It’s part of a wider 161 million commitment from the government for asphalt and resurfacing of highways.
Canada-U-S Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc will be in Washington again this week, meeting with U-S Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick with hopes of closing some gaps in trade negotiations for Canada. LeBlanc said last week that getting a trade deal with the U-S will likely require more time.
If a deal is not reached, President Donald Trump has said a 35 per cent tariff on goods not compliant with the Canada-U-S-Mexico Agreement on trade would go into place August 1st.
