Gasoline prices and diesel prices both increased overnight in Nova Scotia. Gasoline prices increased by 3.3 cents per litre, leaving the minimum pump price for regular self-serve gasoline at 173.2 cents per litre in the local area. Diesel prices increased by 5.5 cents per litre, putting the minimum pump price for diesel at 179.8 cents per litre locally.
Police have issued a provincewide arrest warrant for a man who may be armed and was last seen in a wooded area about 50 kilometres east of Halifax. R-C-M-P issued an alert about 26-year-old Brandon Crawford Grant — a local resident — after officers responded Wednesday night to a report of a man in distress who damaged a home with an axe and ran into the woods. Grant is described as 6-foot-4, 300 pounds — and he has brown hair and brown eyes. An R-C-M-P emergency response team was deployed to the area, and the local high school, hospital and nursing home were placed in lockdowns that have since been lifted.
Atlantic Canada’s largest newspaper chain has a potential buyer waiting in the wings. The court-appointed monitor overseeing the potential sale of the SaltWire Network and The Halifax Herald has confirmed the selection of an unnamed bidder who plans to operate the chain as a viable business. Toronto-based K-S-V Restructuring says talks with the bidder are advancing toward a transaction that could be completed by August 9th. On March 13th, a Nova Scotia Supreme Court judge granted the two insolvent media companies protection from creditors owed about 90-million dollars. Saltwire owns a number of newspaper publications across the region, including The News in New Glasgow.
The federal government is planning talks to launch a national school food program before the end of the next school year. But it’ll take time for organizations that already feed kids to scale up their operations. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the new policy that will guide negotiations at a press conference in Nova Scotia on Thursday. The Liberals set aside one-billion dollars over five years for the program.
