Maritimers, as well as Canadians in Quebec and southern Ontario, can expect wet, blustery weather this weekend. The Canadian Hurricane Centre in Halifax says a low-pressure system is expected to move over the northeastern United States and toward Canadian waters, drawing in tropical moisture from Hurricane Melissa. PEI and the other Maritime provinces could see up to 50 millimetres of rain and 70-to-80-kilometre-per-hour wind gusts on Friday.
The Bank of Canada cut its benchmark interest rate by a quarter point on Wednesday to 2.25 per cent as economists widely expected. Canada’s economy is showing cracks from U-S tariffs, but the central bank says inflation appears largely under control. Bank of Canada governor Tiff Macklem says there isn’t much more it can do at this point to help the country through the turmoil tied to tariffs — something he considers a structural shock to the economy.
New Glasgow Regional Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying two people police say were responsible for the use of a stolen debit card. It was used to withdraw an undisclosed amount of money from several locations in New Glasgow, Trenton and Port Hawkesbury. In their investigation, police have released photos of the suspects involved in an effort to learn their identity.
Ferry service between Wood Islands and Caribou returns to normal today after some crossings had to be cancelled Wednesday because of a technical issue. Northumberland Ferries reported last night that the issue has been resolved, and that service would resume with the 7:00am crossing from Wood Islands today.

The Toronto Blue Jays are one win away from their first World Series title in more than 30 years. Rookie pitcher Trey Yesavage was dominant as he struck out 12 Dodgers in a 6-1 win in Game 5. Davis Schneider and Vladimir Guerrero Junior launched back-to-back home runs to start the game. The Jays lead the Series three games to two and can clinch the championship at home Friday night.
