On Saturday, the RCMP responded to a situation on Pictou Landing Road in Pictou Landing involving an armed person who had barricaded himself inside a home.  There was a heavy police presence in the area, and shortly before 10:00pm the RCMP advised that they had taken the person into custody safely

The Nova Scotia emergency management department says the Lake George wildfire remains out of control and has grown.

The fire now covers an estimated 285 hectares near Aylesford.

The province says dry and windy conditions have made it difficult to fight the fire.

Over 100 fire fighters remain on scene, along with airplanes, helicopters and several pieces of heavy machinery.

 

 

Prime Minister Mark Carney is heading to Washington to meet with U-S President Donald Trump.

Carney is travelling to the U-S capital tioday before meeting with Trump on Tuesday to discuss the increased U-S duties on steel, aluminum, autos and lumber.

It also comes as Trump is set to impose a 10-per-cent tariff on Canada’s softwood lumber sector on October 14th.

The two countries launched consultations last month ahead of the upcoming review of the trade agreement between Canada, the U-S and Mexico.

 

 

The Nova Scotia legislature has wrapped up business following a short, eight-day sitting.  Premier Tim Houston says he doesn’t believe the government rushed through its agenda, despite the short length of proceedings.  However, Opposition N-D-P Leader Claudia Chender says the brevity of the sitting shows the government doesn’t want to face criticism in the house of assembly.  The sitting was dominated by a controversial omnibus bill that — among other things — would make it illegal to block access to logging roads on Crown land, and would impose a 50-thousand-dollar fine and/or six months in jail for those who ignore removal orders.

 

 

The CIBC Run For The Cure Pictou County was held on Sunday Morning at Trenton Park. They raised over $30,000 for breast cancer research and support.
