Following weeks of White House hype and public anxiety, U-S President Donald Trump will finally announce on Wednesday what his barrage of self-described “reciprocal” tariffs will look like.
Trump’s new tariffs are intended to boost U-S manufacturing while punishing other countries for perceived economic inequity.
He says other nations have been taking advantage of the U-S, but experts worry his risky move could do more harm than good and might plunge the U-S economy into a downturn — all while destroying decades-old alliances. Along with the already expected reciprocal tariffs against Canada, it’s not clear if Trump’s temporary pause on separate economy-wide duties will end.
The Town of New Glasgow is seeking input as it’s in the process of developing a new Land Use Bylaw and Municipal Planning Strategy. The Town is gathering feedback through a blend of online and in-person sessions. The first was last night at Ward One Recreation Centre. The second is tonight at North End Recreation Centre on High Street from 6 to 8 p.m.; and then on Thursday at West Side Community Centre from 6 to 8 p.m. If you’re unable to attend the events in person, online feedback can also be provided through the Town of New Glasgow’s website
As of Tuesday, the number of paid days that Nova Scotians can take if they are experiencing domestic violence goes from three to five. The province says more than ten-thousand Nova Scotians accessed domestic violence services through public and community-based programs in the last year. Employees with at least three months of service are also now entitled to up to 16 consecutive weeks of the leave, plus 10 additional days. Of that time, five days are paid and can be used during either leave period.
The Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation released its third-quarter financial results Tuesday, showing total sales are slightly down. The liquor and cannabis seller is reporting that sales are down 0.6 per cent between September 30th and December 29th, 2024, compared with the same time period the previous year. The small dip is due to a 1.1 per cent decrease in alcohol sales and a 2.7 per cent increase in cannabis sales. Earnings for the quarter decreased by 5.4 per cent to 75.7 million dollars.
After five years of restoration work, the Ship Hector will once again take to the waters on July 12th, marking a new era for the ship’s storied history. The launch event will include a formal ceremony, cultural performances, heritage displays, and the highly anticipated dockside launch of the Hector into Pictou Harbour. Throughout the entire launch weekend, Pictou will have a lot of festivities, from free outdoor waterfront concerts and a Pictou Yacht Club regatta to a headline Launch Day concert at the deCoste Performing Arts Centre. Adding to the excitement, the iconic Bluenose II will make a special visit to Pictou, welcoming guests.
