The provincial government has granted a five-week extension to Northern Pulp as the company works on a plan to build a new kraft paper mill on the province’s southwestern shore. The government announced the extension, saying the company “has not reached the financial threshold” to support the proposed project in Liverpool. Northern Pulp has been under creditor protection since June 2020 after it closed its mill in Abercrombie Point, having failed to meet the province’s environmental requirements for a new effluent treatment plant. In May of last year, a settlement agreement was reached between the government and Northern Pulp’s owner — Paper Excellence in B-C — which has been working on a feasibility study for the new mill.

U-S President Donald Trump has slapped all countries, including Canada, with 25 per cent tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports into the United States.

Hundreds of weather forecasters and other workers at the agency have been fired amid sweeping cuts to the U-S public service by the Department of Government Efficiency, which is led by billionaire Elon Musk.
