A Trenton man says he’s being taxed as a “forgotten corner of the town”. Duncan Ross lives on Little Harbour Road and says he’s paying close to $2,000 a year in property taxes, but supplies his own water and septic services. As for policing, Ross says he saw no police patrols in his neighbourhood during all of last summer. He now wants to break away from the Town of Trenton, after a meeting with the town’s CAO seemed to go nowhere. Ross says his next step is meeting with MLA Pat Dunn to find out if the province can intervene.
DID YOU WORK AT TRENTON WORKS BETWEEN 1998 – 2007? YOU MAY BE OWED MONEY

People who worked at Trenton Works between 1998 and 2007 might be doing themselves a favour if they get in touch with local MLA Pat Dunn’s office. Dunn has discovered a pot of money for former workers who are now of retirement age. The problem is, the company isn’t actively looking for people who are entitled to the money. So Dunn is collecting peoples’ names to submit them as a batch. All you have to do is contact Dunn’s office with your social insurance number to find out if you’re eligible. Dunn thinks up to 70 people stand to gain from the plan. So far, 700 former workers at the Trenton plan have come forward. The company that holds the plan figures it’ll likely be January before anyone hears back. To access the money, you must be at least 65, be in financial need or facing health issues. The number of Dunn’s office is 902-752-3646. The two people helped so far were able to access more than a thousand dollars.

Yesterday we told you that pharmacists will soon be able to re-fill or renew some of your prescriptions. Today we’re able to deliver the good news that provincial government will cover the cost of that. Nova Scotia is committing more than $9 million over five years to pay more than 1300 pharmacists to prescribe medications for birth control, urinary tract infections and shingles. Those payouts start January 1st. On April 1, they will also be funded to renew prescriptions for an additional 180 days for things like asthma inhalers and blood pressure medications. You can still get the pharmacists services right now if you don’t mind paying a small fee, but the government will begin picking up the tab in the new year.

A regulatory body has revoked the funeral director licence of a former employee of a Cape Breton funeral home for, among other things, re-using funeral caskets. The Nova Scotia Funeral Directors Registration Board says a two-day inquiry held last month found Jillian Nemis guilty of non-compliance. The board found her actions, while working at S.W. Chant and Son Funeral Home in Sydney involved professional misconduct in the re-use of funeral caskets and in providing funeral director services for an unlicensed funeral home. Board chair Adam Tipert says he is shocked and disappointed by the choices made by Nemis and the funeral home – especially because of “their position of trust with families.” Cape Breton Regional Police launched a fraud investigation into the funeral home several weeks after a suspicious fire at the facility in February. Service Nova Scotia suspended the funeral home’s licence to sell prepaid funerals over accounting issues, and the government also suspended the home’s operating licence in the wake of the fire.
Storytelling platform Wattpad says it will open what it calls a second headquarters in Halifax to tap into the city’s talent pool as the company grows. Company CEO and co-founder Allen Lau says the move was sparked by the company’s rapid growth and need for expansion, and the cost of doing business in Halifax is lower than Toronto. He says the plan is to eventually make the new operation equal in size to their current Toronto head office, where 200 people are on the payroll. Halifax Mayor Mike Savage says the Wattpad move is a validation of the city’s efforts to lure more tech companies to the region.
