TOURISM NUMBERS DOWN SLIGHTLY IN NOVA SCOTIA

The Tourism Industry Association of Nova Scotia’s annual summit continues today and tomorrow in Halifax, where they’re breaking down the 5 % drop in tourism numbers from last week. Some of blame for those declines can be broken into 3 categories, with 50-thousand lost visitors since the Yarmouth Ferry was out of service all season as the Trump administration blocks efforts by the province to set up a new Ferry Terminal in Bar Harbour. The other two items being blamed for the drop in summer visitors is the loss of sketchy Boeing Max 8 aircraft, which blocked direct flights between Halifax and London, and Hurriance Dorian in September, which dropped tourism numbers by 25,000 in that month alone. The bright spot was the cruise ship sector, with visits to Halifax and other ports like Sydney and Pictou bringing in 2.2 per cent more visitors. Tourism officials are also optimistic about next summer now that Travel Lemming’s panel of influential travel bloggers has named Nova Scotia as one of the Top 30 Emerging Destinations globally for 2020 and the number one overall destination within the US and Canada.
MOTORISTS REMINDED TO LOCK IT OR LOSE IT
If you’re doing any overnight visiting with friends or relatives in the Halifax area this Christmas season, you’ll need to lock up your vehicles and hide your valuables, or take them inside. Police in the city say they had 13 vehicles broken into in just the past week. RCMP say the incidents occurred in Cole Harbour, Lucasville, Upper Sackville and Beaver Bank. In an effort to help protect peoples’ property, police say they have increased foot patrols and have been leaving lock-up reminders on vehicles. Meanwhile, RCMP province-wide say they are also running a crime prevention series of social media reminders using the hash-tag “#9PMROUTINE”. That’s being used to make sure homeowners from Yarmouth to Cape Breton check that their homes and vehicles are locked and secure every night at 9:00 p.m.
A bus carrying a bantam hockey team from the Valley slid off Highway 105 in Queensville, Cape Breton over the weekend. The 13 and 14 year-old players from the Bantam Valley Wildcats were on their way to a game in the Sydney area. Luckily most of the teenage Wildcats were not hurt, thanks to the bus travelling below the speed limit in snowy weather. One of the players did suffer minor arm injuries, but coaches and other volunteers are thankful that’s all they’re dealing with.
WESTVILLE LANE GETS NEW NAME!

Campbells Lane in Westville has officially been renamed MacKarney Lane. The change in names was necessary due to some confusion for emergency responders. Councillor Lynn MacDonald suggested the name change in honour of the MacKarney family at a Planning Advisory Committee meeting. The MacKarneys are long time residents of Westville and very faithful volunteers with many organizations such as the Westville & Area Garden Club.

Canada’s premiers are meeting today just outside Toronto for the first time as a group since the federal election. Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe and Alberta Premier Jason Kenney want Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to change the equalization formula, but there is unlikely to be consensus on that around the premiers’ table. Moe, who is chair of the Council of the Federation, says all of the premiers will come to the meeting with various priorities and differing opinions, but the goal is to find a few issues on which they have common ground. Some of the issues include a national pharmacare program and energy pipelines.
