The province is hoping a modern ride-sharing program will help ease the struggle of people who have problems finding suitable transportation in the rural counties on the mainland and in Cape Breton. Decision makers have issued a request for information for what they’re labelling”Rural Ride Share Field Tests.” Energy Minister Derek Mombourquette says he’s even open to the idea of Uber or Lyft moving into rural parts of the province. The aim is to set it up for mid-sized rural areas with populations between 15,000 to 40,000 people.” The locations have yet to be decided. Mombourquette says the province has $250,000 to help pay for three separate rural ride share pilot projects. The idea comes on the heels of this fall’s news that the towns of New Glasgow and Stellarton are getting a fixed bus route. The service will start next April as a three-year pilot project to carry passengers in a loop through the towns from seven main destinations. (With files from CBC)
