FOOD DRIVE A SUCCESS!
Preliminary numbers show yesterday’s Pictou County food drive brought in the equivalent of 13,000 pounds or dollars in donations of both commodities. The official tally is expected later today. So congrats if you were able to help out.
Gas prices have been pegged by the NS Utility and Review Board at $113.9 per litre today. That’s a tiny drop of just six-tenths of a penny from last week for the local pricing zone, covering Pictou, most of Colchester, Antigonish and Guysborough Counties.
DUNN QUESTIONS SENIORS VS. AFFORDABLE HOUSING
Pictou Centre Tory MLA Pat Dunn wants the province to spend more on affordable housing. He says people under the age of 60, with some people even as young as their fifties, are being referred to Seniors’ Housing complexes in Pictou County, when they should rightfully have a place in affordable housing facilities. Housing Minister Chuck Porter told the legislature he’s always keeping an eye on housing situations for people who need it, and that’s not going to change.
In the wake of a few cases being thrown out of court this week, including assault and drunk driving charges, one thing that will be in court today is the provincial government’s move to send Crown Prosecutors back to work. Premier Stephen McNeil says the province cannot afford to give the prosecutors a 17 per cent raise in pay.
An important piece of infrastructure will be soon be constructed in the business park operated by New Scotland Business Development along East River Road. Just under $490-thousand dollars will be spent to install a wastewater lift station, making it a full service park with natural gas lines, full water and waste lines ready to go. In the spirit of this partnership, water to the business park will come from the Town of New Glasgow while service and maintenance on the wastewater lift station will be done by Pictou County.
SCHEER REVIEW SHOWS PETER MACKAY MIGHT BE URGED ON
Tory leader Andrew Scheer might have some work to do in order to hang onto his job in next Spring’s mandatory leadership review. But a couple of Conservatives who’ve been bringing up the name of well-known Pictou County Tory Peter MacKay are also admitting that might not be necessary – if Scheer makes the right moves in this minority parliament. A third source within the Conservative Party is talking about Scheer’s question and answer session online this week, and says Scheer’s refusal to take part in LGBT pride events were regularly brought up by voters on the doorsteps over the past month along with his views on abortion. The Conservative source says if these concerns are not addressed, Tories will struggle to win more support in Ontario and Quebec the next time around, and Peter MacKay’s return might be a serious option.
The newly-elected Trudeau government expects to get $500 million a year out of the expanded Trans Mountain pipeline and is promising to spend it all on cleaner sources of energy and projects that pull carbon out of the atmosphere. Finance Minister Bill Morneau told The Canadian Press in an interview this week that the expanded pipeline is not fodder for negotiating with other parties in the minority government. Rather, he says, it is a crucial piece of the puzzle of financing Canada’s transition to a clean energy economy. The plan is to twin the pipeline from Edmonton to the coast of B-C. 22-hundred workers have already been hired for the project.
