Police in New Brunswick say it’s quite possible a missing woman from Moncton could be travelling in Nova Scotia.
Police say Miranda Lee Mills was last seen in central Moncton shortly before 10:00 o’clock Monday morning.
She is described as being 5’3″ and approximately 160 lbs with green eyes and long hair that is darker than what you’ll see in the photo on our website. RCMP say she was last seen wearing black leggings, silver flip-flops and a blue hooded sweatshirt and was carrying a pink jacket.
Police believe Mills could be travelling in an older model silver hatchback with black rims – and again, they have reason to believe that she’s here in Northern Nova Scotia.

An accused animal killer from the local area will be back in Pictou Court on November 12th. In February, seven dead puppies and a dead dog were removed from a home where David Oakley was living. Two new charges have been laid against him, resulting in the delay until next month.

It’s been a dry and unusual summer of bear sightings, and Lands and Forestry officials have been putting out warnings about extra bears being encountered. The latest sighting is from the area behind the Hector Arena in Pictou. If you see a bear locally, provincial media officer Lisa Jarrett is asking you to report it to the Lands and Forestry office by calling 902-922-4020.
The date for the by-election to replace the council vacancy created by the resignation of Roger Mackay as Westville’s mayor will be made public later this month. The remaining members of Westville Town Council will meet on October 15th to announce that date. MacKay left as Mayor during the summer to run federally for the Conservatives, but stepped down from that challenge in an effort to spend more time with his friends and family.
Today’s mock search and rescue exercise on the ferries between here and PEI will take place this afternoon. Fisheries and Oceans is coordinating the communication side of things, and they tell us 50 people will be acting as passengers on board the ferry for the purpose of today’s training exercise in the waters off Wood Islands. A couple of afternoon ferry runs will be cancelled as a result, so it’s best to check Ferries.ca for your updates.

A total of 10,843 students were enrolled in programs at Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) campuses across the province as of this past Monday. That’s the annual date for the College’s official enrolment count. 633 of those students are at the Pictou Campus, a decrease of 39 students compared to last year. By contrast, the Truro Campus picked up 30 extra students this year, with 786 enrollments. NSCC Academic Vice President Anna Burke says the college system expects to welcome approximately 20,000 students through the College’s full suite of offerings this academic year. That includes apprenticeship, continuing education, continuous intake and customized training.
The Community College’s survey of graduates shows 88% are employed, most in their field of study, with 92% of those people living and working here in Nova Scotia.

For the second federal election in a row, the Rhinoceros Party is providing a tongue in cheek candidate in the riding of Kings Hants. As the party’s M-P hopeful, Nicholas Tan is promising to provide steroids to all medical workers to increase their performance levels. The Rhinos say that’s meant to counter the shortage of doctors and nurses. And to promote car-pooling they want to legislate that the brake pedal be moved to the passenger’s side in all vehicles.
PARENTS WHO READ BOOKS TO KIDS ARE CLOSER THAN E-READER USERS
A leading pediatric journal has published a new study showing that reading to your young children brings you closer when you’re using a book made of paper. Electronic reading apparently causes both the adult and the child to refrain from touching the device, creating distance in the reading experience. But if you encourage tiny fingers to help you keep track of what page you’re on, or point out titles and illustrations, that physical connection brings the reader and the child closer, creating more of a shared and trusting experience.

Some interesting numbers are in – showing who, among our provincial politicians attended last Friday’s giant climate strike rally in Halifax. That was the day the government concluded House business earlier than usual in the morning to allow MLAs time to attend the rally.
Only 8 of the 27 Liberal MLAs attended the event. They were: Environment Minister Gordon Wilson, Lands and Forestry Minister Iain Rankin, Education Minister Zach Churchill, Business Minister Geoff MacLellan, Immigration Minister Lena Diab, Ben Jessome, Suzanne Lohnes-Croft and Rafah DiCostanzo.
The premier was not at the event because he was in contract negotiations with doctors.
7 of 17 MLAs from the P-C caucus attended the rally. They were: Barbara Adams, Tim Halman, Brad Johns, Tory Rushton, Elizabeth Smith-McCrossin, Colton LeBlanc and Steve Craig.
Tory Leader Tim Houston was absent, because he was here in Pictou County with P.E.I. Premier Dennis King.
Four of five NDP MLAs took part in the Climate Rally, including party Leader Gary Burrill, Claudia Chender, Susan LeBlanc and Lisa Roberts.
Halifax police say more than 10,000 people were on hand for that.

The provincial NDP says the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian shows that an emergency telecommunications plan is required in Nova Scotia. Leader Gary Burrill says too many communities were cut off from internet and phone service post-storm as cell phone towers lacked enough back-up power to maintain the system. The NDP wants to require government and municipal emergency management teams to include a plan for continuous public telecom services.

The Royal Canadian Mint has issued a glow-in-the-dark coin that captures the eerie scene more than 50 years ago when awestruck witnesses reporting seeing what was officially documented as a UFO crash off southwestern Nova Scotia.
The colourful image on the rectangular coin shows three fishermen aboard a boat, staring and gesturing as the ghostly image of a flying saucer appears to plunge into the dark waters near Shag Harbour. But something special happens when the included black-light flashlight is used to illuminate the coin in the dark: the spaceship disappears, but four orange lights remain in the sky, as described by those who reported seeing something that moonless night on Oct. 4, 1967. The pure silver collectors coins with a face value of $20 went on sale yesterday for $129.95 each. By the end of the day, the mint says 95 per cent had been sold.
